Dear Honorable Guests and Distinguished Horticultural Scientists,
On behalf of members of the Korean Society for Horticultural Science (KSHS) and myself, it is my great honor to have this opportunity to express my congratulations in this opening ceremony of the 3rd Asian Horticultural Congress 2020 (AHC2020) in Bangkok, Thailand under the theme “Asian Horticulture for a Sustainable World”.
I appreciate all the effort put together for the AHC2020 by Dr. Ananata Dalodom, Chairperson of the AHC2020 Organizing Committee and President of the Horticultural Science Society of Thailand, and its members. It is very grateful for us to take part in the AHC2020 despite the continued COVID-19 pandemic over a year all over the world.
Horticultural industry has great potential for further development, especially in Asia, to meet increasing and uniquely Asiatic demand for fresh and healthy produce. Increased interest in food safety by consumers requires eco-friendly and sustainable production. At the same time extreme weather conditions caused by global climatic changes necessitate development of more sustainable and stable production systems with the aid of protected cultivation, artificial intelligence, and information and communications technology. Asian countries, encompassing various geographical and climatic conditions, have diverse plant genetic resources, and increasing research competency and personnel in horticultural science and technology. As the COVID-19 brings about enormous changes in every corner of our work and life, new ways are sought to provide safe and fresh foods for physical and mental health of consumers such as locally-adapted crop management system.
I and members of the KSHS, who are proud of laying the foundation and hosting the 1st AHC in Jeju, Korea in 2008 with the theme ‘Asian Horticulture Towards Collaboration and Prosperity’, sincerely hope unlimited exchange of information and ideas among participants in this 3rd AHC on appropriate and timely topics to further accelerate the advancement of horticultural science and technology for not only all Asian countries, but also all other countries.
All members of the KSHS and I wish that every participant is healthy and have great time with a variety of interesting and stimulating topics, and also valuable experience at this Congress.
